Puppet Labs, the company behind Puppet, the leading open source data center automation and configuration management tool, today announced that John W. Rutherford, previously vice president of business development at MySQL, has joined Puppet Labs’ executive team as vice president of business development. He will report to Luke Kanies, founder and CEO of Puppet Labs.
“Puppet has become a new force within the open source community by delivering the first reusable and portable infrastructure platform offering IT administrators the ability to deliver higher service levels by managing complex environments more effectively,” said John Rutherford. “Cloud computing solutions are becoming a scalable alternative to traditional data centers, and Puppet is there to meet the increased demand in a more cost-effective way.”
As the head of business development for MySQL, Rutherford was responsible for strategic partner collaborations designed to deliver new innovative solutions to the open source community. MySQL’s pluggable framework offers a unique opportunity for third parties looking to capture the attention of a fast-growing and evolving install base. MySQL’s fast growing open source footprint resulted in an acquisition by Sun Microsystems in 2008 which surpassed all prior open source valuations equally $1 billion in consideration. Rutherford’s 20-year career in business development and sales have created many significant partnerships and delivered scores of landmark deals at Oracle, Iona, Borland and Informix Software.
“John’s ability to create meaningful partnerships has propelled several products into world-class leaders and is a key reason why I’ve invited him to join our executive team,” said Kanies. “His proven track record indicates a unique understanding and instinct for pursuing the kinds of relationships we need to achieve our goal of Pervasive Puppet.”
Forum to Cover How Configuration Management Tool Helps Organizations Ensure Consistency Across Their Virtualized Environments
Puppet Labs, home of Puppet, the open source leader in data center automation, today announced it will present at this year’s SouthEast LinuxFest (SELF) v2.0, June 12th at the Marriott at Renaissance Park Hotel in Spartanburg, S.C.
Michael DeHaan, product manager for Puppet Labs, will demonstrate how the Puppet data center automation platform is used to manage some of the world’s most unique and important computer environments. He will also discuss how companies and organizations can get started with Puppet, some best practices pointers, and where the configuration management tool for systems administrators is headed.
“Organizations challenged with managing hundreds of thousands of servers and workstations need to ensure consistency across their entire infrastructure — this is especially true in heavily virtualized or ‘cloud’ environments,” said DeHaan. “Puppet provides a model-driven framework that helps organizations of all sizes automate their server and application provisioning, configuration, and monitoring to ensure consistency, which allows them to concentrate more on their strategic IT goals and less on day-to-day IT tasks.”
The conference, which is one of the largest Linux events in the Southeast, will feature a lineup of renown speakers worldwide known for their work in the Linux and open source software communities. For more information about the event, visit http://www.southeastlinuxfest.org/.
Session to Discuss How NYSE Manages Enterprise Linux Environment Using Puppet for Data Center Automation and Configuration Management
Puppet Labs, home of Puppet, the open source leader in data center automation, today announced it will present with NYSE Euronext, a leading global operator of financial markets and providers of innovative trading technologies, at the 6th Annual Red Hat Summit, June 23rd in Boston.
The session, “Deploying Data Centers with Puppet,” will cover how the NYSE manages its Enterprise Linux environment using Puppet in conjunction with Red Hat’s kickstart technology and Red Hat Network Satellite to automate server deployments from the base operating system installation to final application configuration.
“We’re glad to have the New York Stock Exchange sharing their knowledge about Puppet with other Red Hat Enterprise Linux users,” said Michael DeHaan, product manager for Puppet Labs. “This is a great example of Puppet providing a mission-critical data center service and how you can use Puppet as a strategic platform to simplify your day-to-day data center operations. It’s easy to say these are some of the most important computers on the planet, and we’re happy to be helping with them.”
Presenting with DeHaan will be Rafael Brito, lead analyst at NYSE Euronext. Along with discussing strategies around deploying the automation solution in NYSE Euronext data centers, the session will cover information on kickstart bootstrapping, network configuration, the Puppet language, and the NYSE’s own best practices for agile systems management.
The session will take place Wednesday, June 23rd, from 3:10-4:20pm, at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston. For more information about the Red Hat Summit, visit http://www.redhat.com/promo/summit/2010/.
Session Will Cover How Puppets’ Theoretical Approach Simplifies Large Scale Data Center Management Challenges Brought on by Cloud Computing and Virtualization
Puppet Labs, home of Puppet, the open source leader in data center automation, today announced it will be part of the USENIX Configuration Management Workshop, which take place Thursday, June 24th in Boston, MA.
Michael DeHaan, product manager for Puppet Labs, will discuss the theoretical approach Puppet takes to configuration management, as well as the future of the application and how Puppet is simplifying the large scale datacenter management challenges brought on by cloud computing and virtualization.
“As growing virtual environments become more complex with the development of clouds, many of today’s configuration management tools simply cannot handle the scale and complexity in the cloud,” said DeHaan. “Puppets’ data center automation platform provides system administrators with the agility, flexibility and scalability they need to manage large numbers of applications in cloud computing environments.”
The USENIX Configuration Management Workshop brings together developers, power users, and new adopters of configuration management tools to share their perspectives on the tools the use for system administration. Puppet Labs, home of Puppet, the open source leader in data center automation, today announced a new version of its Puppet Dashboard, the web interface and reporting tool for Puppet installation. Key upgrades include enhanced data visualization and reporting indexes that dramatically improve the speed of requests.
“To effectively control and manage today’s complex data center environments, IT managers require more informative, visually appealing management tools that allow them to understand everything that’s happening in the system,” said Rein Henrichs, lead developer of Puppet Dashboard at Puppet Labs. “We are continuing to improve the Puppet Dashboard and make upgrades that help customers gain access to information faster, enhance their real-time reporting capabilities, and improve the overall user experience.”
Puppet Dashboard facilitates management and configuration tasks that give users a quick visual snapshot of everything that’s taking place in their system. With the latest version users can review the status of recent runs, failure percentages, and an activity feed of recent changes to nodes in their system. The user interface allows customers to configure nodes using parameters, classes and groups for use as an external nodes tools, and monitor the status of nodes through real-time reporting and versioned change tracking.
